Sawyer Garrett: From MEGA Gymnast to MIT Track & Field Standout
Sawyer Garrett’s evolution as an athlete reflects versatility, dedication, and a drive for excellence — qualities first fostered through gymnastics and now on display as he competes for one of the nation’s premier academic and athletic institutions.
A Foundation Built in Motion
Before Sawyer embarked on his collegiate athletic journey, he developed his athleticism through gymnastics training — a background that helped build the strength, body awareness, and coordination critical to advanced track and field events. His early multi-sport training, which included gymnastics and soccer, laid the groundwork for his success in pole vaulting later in high school.
High School Success
At Dover-Sherborn Regional High School in Massachusetts, Sawyer distinguished himself as a top pole vaulter. He captured the Massachusetts Division 5 championship and went on to win the New England Outdoor Track & Field Championship, soaring to a personal-best height of 14 feet, 9 inches — a leap that placed him among the region’s elite vaulters and helped propel him to the college level.
Joining the MIT Track & Field Team
Following his graduation in 2022, Sawyer accepted an opportunity to compete with MIT Athletics while pursuing his degree in Finance at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As of the 2025-26 season, he is listed as a senior on the MIT Men’s Track & Field team, specializing in pole vault — a technical event that suits his combination of power, precision, and agility.
At MIT, Sawyer has continued to excel in New England competition, recording strong performances at both indoor and outdoor meets. During the 2024–25 season, he achieved a career best of 4.45 meters at the Crimson Elite meet, highlighting his continued improvement at the collegiate level.
Academics and Athletics in Harmony
Balancing the rigors of MIT’s academic environment with elite athletic performance is no small feat. Sawyer’s major in Finance reflects his commitment not just to sport, but to academic excellence — a hallmark of MIT student-athletes who thrive both in and out of competition.
The Role of MEGA
Sawyer’s early gymnastics training — including time spent at programs like MEGA — played a role in building the coordination, strength, and competitive mindset that would serve him so well in pole vaulting and track and field. Gymnastics’ emphasis on body control and spatial awareness translates beautifully to events like the vault, where precision and athleticism are paramount.
Looking Ahead
As a senior athlete at MIT, Sawyer continues to contribute to the competitive strength of the team while preparing for life beyond athletics. Whether reaching new heights on the runway or tackling complex financial problems in the classroom, his story is one of adaptability, tenacity, and continuous growth.
