Matt Cormier: From MEGA Gymnastics to Penn State

Matt Cormier has emerged as one of collegiate gymnastics’ most exciting competitors, blending his early club training with elite performance for the Penn State Nittany Lions Men's Gymnastics through multiple standout seasons.

Early Gymnastics Roots and Development

Matt’s gymnastics journey began long before college — he trained in the competitive environment of Massachusetts Elite Gymnastics Academy (MEGA) while attending Milton High School in Massachusetts. During his junior elite career, Matt earned impressive results in national competition, including as the 2019 Junior Olympic National Champion on floor exercise and vault, and placed highly across the all-around at top-tier meets. His success at the Junior World Championships and other national events showcased his potential early on and laid the foundation for major collegiate success.

At MEGA and in junior elite competition, Matt developed the strength, spatial awareness, and competitive calm that track seamlessly into the NCAA arena — particularly on explosive events like vault and floor exercise.

Starting at Penn State: A 2021 Freshman

Matt began his college gymnastics career at Penn State University in 2021, joining the Nittany Lions as a freshman on the men’s gymnastics team.

From the very start, he made an impact. In his first season he notched multiple event wins — including strong showings on floor and vault — competed in the Big Ten Championships and at the NCAA Championships, and earned CGA Regular Season All-American honors on floor.

Collegiate Achievements and Growth

Across his Penn State tenure, Matt has consistently risen to the challenge of NCAA competition, establishing himself as one of the team’s most dynamic performers:

  • Multiple Personal Best Scores – His routines on floor, vault, and high bar have continually shown improvement and event-winning potential.

  • All-American Honors – In 2023 he earned All-American status in the all-around, parallel bars, and high bar, underscoring his versatility across six events.

  • Three-Time Big Ten Gymnast of the Week – Recognized for leading Penn State in multiple events during the 2023 season.

  • Big Ten Regular Season Title – In 2025, Matt’s routines helped the Nittany Lions clinch a Big Ten regular season championship, a milestone for the program.

His competitive results reflect a gymnast who not only contributes deep lineups but also steps up in high-stakes moments throughout the NCAA season.

Balancing Elite and Collegiate

Matt’s passion for gymnastics carries beyond the NCAA stage — he remains active in elite competition with goals toward representing the United States on international platforms and working toward future World Championships and Olympic cycles. In interviews, he has described merging his collegiate experience with elite aspirations as part of his long-term journey in the sport.

Beyond the Mat

Off the competition floor, Matt studies kinesiology at Penn State, combining his athletic insights with academic inquiry into human performance and movement.

Legacy in the Making

From his formative years at MEGA to standing out at Big Ten and NCAA national meets, Matt Cormier embodies the resilience, technical excellence, and competitive drive that define elite collegiate gymnasts. His performances continue to elevate the Penn State program and inspire the next generation of gymnasts coming up through club ranks.
