Kayla Rocke: From MEGA Gymnastics to UMass Track & Field Pole Vaulting

Gymnastics Roots at MEGA

Before she ever touched a pole vault runway, Kayla spent her developmental athletic years training at MEGA, where she built the skills that would later make her a natural fit for vaulting:

  • Explosive leg power from tumbling and vault drills

  • Full-body strength and flexibility

  • Superior air awareness from flipping and twisting

  • Precision and body control essential for inverted skills

  • Mental toughness from performing high-pressure routines

MEGA’s coaching staff recognized Kayla as an athlete with exceptional spatial awareness and technical discipline — traits that translate directly into pole vaulting mechanics.

Her gymnastics training laid the foundation for her takeoff explosiveness, inversion mechanics, and bar-clearance form.

Transitioning into Pole Vaulting

Like many gymnasts who discover track & field later in their teens, Kayla transitioned seamlessly into the pole vault. The movements — sprint, plant, takeoff, invert, and flyaway — mirror the power and body shapes she learned at MEGA.

Her progression in the sport was rapid:

  • Clean, technically sound takeoff form

  • Strong plant position and body alignment

  • Excellent swing and inversion due to gymnastics technique

  • Confidence and body control during the turn and push-off

This early mastery helped her stand out in high school vaulting and paved her path to collegiate athletics.

Earning a Scholarship to UMass Amherst

Kayla’s athletic achievements and strong technical foundation earned her a track & field scholarship to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she joined the UMass Minutewomen pole vault squad.

During her time at UMass, Kayla trained and competed in one of New England’s most competitive Division I track & field programs. As a Minutewoman, she:

  • Competed in both indoor and outdoor seasons

  • Represented UMass in Atlantic 10 Conference meets

  • Progressed technically in approach speed, inversion, and bar clearance

  • Continued to build on the body control she developed as a gymnast

Her ability to blend power, precision, and discipline set her apart on the runway.

The MEGA Advantage in Pole Vaulting

Kayla’s journey highlights a defining truth within the MEGA community:

Gymnastics is one of the strongest foundations for pole vault success.

Years of MEGA training gave her:

✔ Aerial mastery

Vaulting requires exact awareness during inversion — something gymnasts train daily.

✔ Strength-to-weight balance

Gymnasts develop exceptional relative strength, critical for swinging on the pole.

✔ Explosive takeoff power

Built in tumbling, transferred perfectly to the vault runway.

✔ Fearlessness and technical discipline

Two qualities essential for clearing heights safely and consistently.

Kayla carried each of these strengths into her collegiate career.

From MEGA to Division I Athletics

Today, Kayla stands as a shining example of the athletic pathways MEGA athletes pursue long after their gymnastics years are over. Her success at UMass Amherst reflects the combination of:

  • Exceptional coaching

  • Years of discipline

  • A deep understanding of movement

  • The fearless mentality of a gymnast

From floor routines to the pole vault runway, Kayla’s story is a testament to the lifelong power of a MEGA foundation.
